Oprah’s Lost Family, Half-Sister Revealed

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

On Monday Oprah Winfrey announced on her television talk show that she has a half sister and that she only found out about her relation last year.

“In the past 25 years, the Oprah Show has reunited a lot of people. I thought I’d seen it all, but this is the miracle of all miracles,” Winfrey said on the show, which brought her together with the half-sister her mother put up for adoption almost 50 years ago.

Winfrey said she was “literally shaken to the core.” by the revelation that she had a long lost sister.

The two women met for the first time on Thanksgiving at their mother’s home.

Patricia, was born in Wisconsin in 1963 while Winfrey then eight years old was living with her father in Tennessee.

Patricia whose last name was not revealed lived in foster homes until the age of seven before being adopted. She had a child at 17 and a second child six years later and as a single mother had to work two jobs to support herself and her children.

Two years ago Patricia discovered that she and Oprah were related, but the famous television host only found out about her sister last year. She had tried for some time to reach Oprah, but was unable to get to her directly.

“Family business should be handled by family,” Patricia told Winfrey and millions of viewers. “It couldn’t be handled by anyone else. That is not fair. It wouldn’t be fair to you.”

Patricia said she had not considered selling her story, instead preferring to tell her sibling herself.

It seems that having principals runs in the family.

Forbes List; Michelle Obama ‘World’s Most Powerful Woman’

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Michelle Obama takes the top spot on Forbes list

The wife of President Obama had “given a new generation of girls and women around the world a role model”, the magazine said.

The Queen comes way down on the list, at 41

The Queen, Britain’s head of state and the head of a commonwealth of some 54 countries, is way down the list of women of influence, in position 41.  She is the only woman in the UK on the list.

The top 10 most powerful women:

1.  Michelle Obama, US first lady
2.  Irene Rosenfeld, chief executive, Kraft Foods
3.  Oprah Winfrey, media mogul
4.  Angela Merkel, German chancellor
5.  Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state
6.  Indra Nooyi, chief executive, Pepsi
7.  Lady Gaga, singer
8.  Gail Kelly, chief executive, Westpac
9.  Beyonce Knowles, singer and fashion designer
10. Ellen DeGeneres, talk show host

Forbes put second Irene Rosenfeld, chief executive of Kraft Food and the head of a company that now owns Cadbury’s.

Lady Gaga is number seven in the top 100

Oprah Winfrey, TV star and media mogul is in third place, above Germany’s top politician, Chancellor Angela Merkel while Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, is in fifth place, two slots about Lady Gaga??

According to Forbes, this year’s index was based on creative influence and entrepreneurship rather than traditional calculations of wealth and position.

“The women on our list, through their respective realms of power and influence, are shaping many of the agenda-setting conversations of our day, and have become dynamic catalysts for driving meaningful change across the world,” publisher Moira Forbes said.

“They have built companies and brands, sometimes by non-traditional means and they have broken through gender barriers in areas of commerce, politics, sports and media and cultural zeitgeist, and thereby affecting the lives of millions, sometimes billions of people.”

The list is not universally agreed on, however and it is easy to understand why.

Veteran City watcher David Buik, a partner in BGC Partners commented “Clearly the editor of Forbes has never stepped out of the US.”

“On an objective basis, Angela Merkel, Dilma Rousseff, the President-elect of Brazil, if she gets elected on October 31, or even Hillary Clinton, would jump ahead of Michelle Obama in my book.”

“In terms of influence Lady Gaga or Oprah Winfrey would be jockeying for position!”
