Waka Flocka Flame knows he’ll become a superstar, and he sees it happening around his fifth album. How’s that for confidence, the singer has just released his debut album and has a single climbing the Hot 100.
“It’s like a race. This first album is like putting on my sneakers,” says Waka Flocka, whose first album, “Flockaveli,” is out today (Oct. 5) on 1017 Brick Squad/Warner Bros./Asylum Records. “I’m looking in the mirror preparing for the race. My second album, I’m jumping on the finish line. Third album, I’m racing again. By my fifth album I’m going to win the race. Guaranteed.”
“Flockaveli” arrives after Waka Flocka Flame (real name: Juaquin Malphurs) spent the past two years releasing mixtapes like “LeBron Flocka James” and “Salute Me or Shoot Me” as a member of Gucci Mane’s So Icey crew. After releasing singles like “Hard in Da Paint” and “O Let’s Do It,” the Wale and Roscoe Dash-assisted track “No Hands” is currently at No. 44 on the Hot 100.
“We’re the new Snoop and Dre,” says the rapper. He claims that a lot of his success is owed to his mom, Debra Antney, who doubles as his manager.
“It works, and let me tell you why: your mother’s always going to want you to go further in life,” he says. “She’s going to teach you. She’s always positive with you and wants you to go to your full potential.”
