Behind the umbrella: Braun in 1940

Some newly-released photographs of Adolf Hitler‘s longtime mistress Eva Braun reveal new dimensions of the woman who married Hitler just before they died in a bunker rather than be captured at the end of world war II.

Braun, a former model is shown at home relaxing with friends and posing glamorously in a swimsuit while on vacation.

The collection of previously unreleased photographs comes from a cache of images confiscated by the U.S. Army in 1945.

Collector and curator Reinhard Schulz released them exclusively for LIFE.

Hitler pets Braun's Scottish terriers, Negus and Katuschka, in 1942.
(Katuschka was nicknamed "Stasi.") Braun didn't like Hitler's German
shepherd, Blondi, who occasionally shared the bedroom with him.

Journalist Brutally Assaulted Whilst Reporting in Egypt

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

The brutal sexual assault and beating of CBS Reporter Lara Logan was subjected to at the hands of a group of men in Cairo has left many network executives questioning whether it’s best to pull all female reporters from Egypt after the event.

Logan, an experienced reporter has covered conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The assault happened 4 days ago when Logan was on duty reporting.  She reportedly lost her group in the commotion leaving her vulnerable.  The reporter was rescued by a group of Egyptian women who came to her aid.

“It’s terrifying what happened to Lara, and we would be irresponsible to not have internal conversations about if young female reporters should ever be put in such dangerous situations,” commented a  CBS executive. “However, the last thing we want to do is blame the victim for being a female.”

Monday, February 14th, 2011

When CBS Los Angeles journalist Serene Branson started to speak gibberish live on air during a Grammys broadcast.   At first people thought it was a joke but any laughter stopped after she was taken to hospital as it was feared she suffered a stroke.

The presenter was unable to get out her words and continued to struggle to speak for around 10 seconds outside the Staples Center.

Soon after CBS 2 News anchorman Paul Magers introduced her, Ms Branson was clearly aware she was having problems.  When it became evident to the broadcaster that there was something wrong she was cut off and the video went to pre-recorded Grammys coverage.

Ms Branson was taken to hospital after the broadcast.

We hope she gets well soon.

Oil Heir J. Paul Getty III Dies at 54

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Paul Getty III, the grandson of American oil magnate J. Paul Getty, died on Saturday in Buckinghamshire, England.  Getty was 54.

Getty who was abducted by the mafia, from a piazza in Rome in 1973 had his right ear severed by the kidnappers when his grandfather refused to send the ransom.

“This is Paul’s ear,” an accompanying note read. “If we don’t get some money within 10 days, the other ear will arrive. In other words he will arrive in little pieces.”

His grandfather was still reluctant to pay the ransom, “I have 14 grandchildren, and if I pay a penny of ransom, I’ll have 14 kidnapped grandchildren,” he said in a statement at the time.

He was released by his captors after 4 months when after reducing the ransom reportedly to $3 million and sending photos of the mutilated boy to the press, the eldest Mr. Getty paid $2.2 million, the maximum that his accountants said would be tax deductable.  The boys father paid the remainder which he borred from the older Getty at 4 per cent interest.

Getty fell into drugs and alcohol addiction a decade later, and suffered an incapacitating drug-induced stroke.

His death followed a long illness, and he is survived by his two children, one of whom is actor Balthazar Getty.

Computer Industry Pioneer Ken Olsen dies at age 84

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Kenneth Olsen, co-founder of Digital Equipment Corp., died on Sunday aged 84.

His death announced by Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., where he was a trustee and benefactor. The college did not release a cause of death.

Olsen launched DEC which is considered an icon in technology circles in 1957. They helped revolutionize the way people interact with computers.

Digital played a key role in the 60’s and 70’s in creating the market for “minicomputers.”  These were powerful, refrigerator-sized machines that appealed to scientists, engineers and the like who did not need the bigger, multimillion-dollar mainframes that were then used by big corporations. In the 80s, when DEC was at it’s peak it was the second-largest computer manufacturer behind International Business Machines Corp.

“In the heady days of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, it’s too easy to forget that it was Ken Olsen’s vision of interactivity that took computing away from the centralized mainframe and into the hands of the people,” said Gordon Bell.  Bell joined DEC in 1960 and for more than 20 years headed the company’s engineering operations.

DEC helped bring computers out from glass-enclosed rooms, where they were operated by men in white lab coats, and made them accessible to small and medium-sized operations and even individual users.

“The computers we built were of a cost and size that they brought computing down a level,” said Bell, now a principal researcher in Microsoft Corp.’s Silicon Valley Research Group.

In 1986, Fortune Magazine called Olsen “America’s most successful entrepreneur.”

A memorial service at Gordon College is set for May 14.

Oprah’s Lost Family, Half-Sister Revealed

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

On Monday Oprah Winfrey announced on her television talk show that she has a half sister and that she only found out about her relation last year.

“In the past 25 years, the Oprah Show has reunited a lot of people. I thought I’d seen it all, but this is the miracle of all miracles,” Winfrey said on the show, which brought her together with the half-sister her mother put up for adoption almost 50 years ago.

Winfrey said she was “literally shaken to the core.” by the revelation that she had a long lost sister.

The two women met for the first time on Thanksgiving at their mother’s home.

Patricia, was born in Wisconsin in 1963 while Winfrey then eight years old was living with her father in Tennessee.

Patricia whose last name was not revealed lived in foster homes until the age of seven before being adopted. She had a child at 17 and a second child six years later and as a single mother had to work two jobs to support herself and her children.

Two years ago Patricia discovered that she and Oprah were related, but the famous television host only found out about her sister last year. She had tried for some time to reach Oprah, but was unable to get to her directly.

“Family business should be handled by family,” Patricia told Winfrey and millions of viewers. “It couldn’t be handled by anyone else. That is not fair. It wouldn’t be fair to you.”

Patricia said she had not considered selling her story, instead preferring to tell her sibling herself.

It seems that having principals runs in the family.

Kidnapped as baby: Carlina White reunites with family after 23 years

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

It’s not every day that a dream comes true but I am sure that must have been what it felt like when after twenty three years from losing her newborn baby Joy White was finally reunited with her daughter Carlina and granddaughter Samani.

Carlina White was sick with fever at just 19 days old when her parents took her to Harlem Hospital in New York.  Carlina was snatched from her crib in the emergency room and had not been seen from Aug. 4, 1987. Police searched for her kidnappers but never found enough evidence to charge any suspects.

Joy White, always had a feeling that her baby was alive, her family said.  On Jan. 4, Nejdra Nance, contacted White, sending along baby photos that looked remarkably similar to the shots of Carlina posted on a missing children’s website.

“She said she just had a feeling, she felt different from the people raising her,” said Nance’s maternal grandmother, Elizabeth White, 71. “She searched, and then she found Joy.”

Nejdra Nance (Carlina White) who was raised in Bridgeport, Conn., told White she thought she may be her daughter.

Joy White contacted the New York Police Department to see if it could help investigate whether the woman was really Carlina White.

“It sounded legitimate and credible, so I had missing persons reach out to her,” said Detective Martin Brown, who fielded the call. DNA tests were performed on Joy White, her ex-husband, Carl Tyson, and 23-year-old Nance and matched, police said.  Nejdra Nance was indeed Carlina White.

As she was so young when she was kidnapped, it’s impossible for Nance to know if the family she has lived was the same family who abducted her but the investigation into what took place will continue.

Nance was on her way back to New York from Atlanta on Wednesday, said Elizabeth White, and Joy White was en route to the airport to meet her. But they already reunited once recently, when Nance came to New York with her 5-year-old daughter, Samani.

“It was wonderful, she didn’t even seem like a stranger, she just fit right in,” Elizabeth White said. “We all went up there, we had dinner together, her aunts were there. She brought her beautiful daughter. It was magic.”

Elizabeth White said she didn’t ask Nance too many questions about how she grew up or any other information as she didn’t want to push her too much.

“That will all come,” Elizabeth White said. “What’s important now is our baby girl is home. She’s home.”

Tuscon shooting suspect linked to fanatical pro-white magazine

    Sunday, January 9th, 2011

Jared Lee Loughner is said to have made threats in the past, ranted about mind control and terrorism on YouTube and among his favourite books were Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto.

According to the local sheriff Loughner has been described as unstable and has been known to make death threats in the past while Fox News’ claim that there is a Department of Homeland Security memo which said Jared Lee Loughner, 22, had ties to American Renaissance, a group founded in 1991 by journalist Jared Taylor that is staunchly anti-immigration, anti-government and anti-Semitic.  The pro white group publishes a monthly article that is openly racist.

Arizona Republican Gabrielle Giffords may have been the target of the mass killing, as ‘the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government and was opposite this group’s ideology when it came to immigration debate,’ it does make you wonder about security around the Congresswoman.   The FBI are now investigating whether the man is the same person who posted a rambling Internet manifesto accusing the government of mind control and demanding a new currency.

Loughner who was taken into custody moments after the shooting at a political meeting held by Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords in a supermarket parking lot where six people died and 19 injured including Giffords.  The authorities believe he may not have been working alone.

    Thursday, January 6th, 2011

The homeless man with the pitch-perfect voice found apparently won’t be homeless – or jobless for long after appearing in an exclusive interview on “The Early Show” Wednesday.

Now Ted Williams has been inundated with job offers but his biggest wish is – to reunite with his 90-year-old mother, Julia Williams.

That wish also cam true when Ted flew to New York to finally see his mom again.

Ted Williams, “Man with Golden Voice,” Speaks

“Early Show” co-anchor Chris Wragge accompanied Julia on her way to LaGuardia Airport for the anticipated reunion. “I’m very proud of him. I hope that he can do good,” she told Wragge.  She hadn’t seen her son in more than ten years, and was overjoyed at the thought.

Williams told Wragge, “God has answered my prayer. I prayed that I would live to see this time when he would do well.”

In the Wednesday “Early Show” interview, an emotional Ted Williams said, “My mom is just really.. I.. I… I’m going to be going to New York, hopefully this afternoon, and please… I apologize if I am getting a little emotional. I haven’t seen my mom in, in great deal of time. … But she doesn’t believe (my good fortune now). … One of my, one of my, my biggest prayers that I … sent out was that she would live long enough for me to, you know, rebound or whatever. And I guess God kept her around, and he kept my pipes around, you know, to, to maybe just have one more shot…”
