Batman ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Casting Shortlist: Knightley, Hathaway, Biel?

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The cast for Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’ cast, seems to be still up in the air. Conflicting reports emerged on Tuesday over which women have been asked to audition for the roles of anti-hero, love interest and reporter so although there is no definite information this is what is being bandied around by those in the know.

First, Collider.com reported that a source told them that Eva Green and Naomi Watts had been cast in the Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, potentially as the anti-hero/love Talia al Ghul and love interest Vicki Vale, respectively.

Shortly after, The Hollywood Reporter came out with its own version of things, casting a wider net and asserting that the film was still holding auditions for the parts. They had Keira Knightley, Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Kate Mara and Charlotte Riley as scheduled to try out, along with Gemme Arteton, though she may have scheduling conflicts given her new role in an upcoming Snow White adaptation.

Nolan co-wrote the script and will direct and thankfully Christian Bale will return for his third adventure as Batman.

Aaron Eckhart, who played Two Face in the previous film, said he hasn’t been asked to work on a third, while Nolan shot down the rumor of Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing The Riddler, as well as the possibility of Mr. Freeze (once played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) returning to the series.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Starlet’s Sexy Transformation

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Here’s a glimpse of Rooney Mara’s ultra-sexy new image for her upcoming, blockbuster role in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

Mara, is going for the “goth Pippi Longstocking,” look the flick’s director, David Fincher, told W magazine, in editions that will hit newsstands Jan. 25.

Fincher, who accompanied Mara on this photo shoot in Stockholm helped craft the look that will be similar to how she’ll appear in the much-anticipated flick.

Jean-Baptiste Mondino for W Magazine

“Dragon” is expected to debut on US movie screens in December.

Mara, 25, who up until she took the part didn’t even have pierced ears said her off-screen appearance is nothing close to the tattooed and pierced look of “Dragon’s” hacker, Lisbeth Salander, who teams up with a well-known journalist to unravel a mysterious disappearance. “They put four holes in each ear, and, weirdly, that hurt the most.”

Mara’s screen test included a disturbing scene in which the character seeks revenge on her rapist.  “We had five of six girls audition with the . . . scene,” Fincher said. “That’s Salander’s big scene and we had to see if they could do it.”

Mara said she didn’t flinch, and appreciated the chance to impress.

There were a few shocked faces when Fincher picked Mara, “The studio pressures you to pick a name,” he said. “All walks of life want the path of least resistance.”

Monday, January 10th, 2011

“True Grit” was tops with $15 million at the weekend and become the first Western to top the $100 million mark since the 1990s.

The Paramount release stars Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon held of strong competition from Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller’s comedy “Little Fockers,” which was No. 1 for the previous two weekends and slipped to second with $13.8 million.

“True Grit,” which was directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, lifted its total to $110.4 million.

Nicolas Cage’s supernatural thriller “Season of the Witch” opened at No. 3 with $10.7 million. Distributed by Relativity Media, the movie stars Cage as a knight in the Middle Ages escorting a suspected witch to her trial.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s country-music drama “Country Strong” premiered at No. 6 with $7.3 million. The Sony Screen Gems release casts Paltrow as a boozy singer trying to get her act straight after rehab.

“True Grit” is a new take on Charles Portis’ novel, previously adapted in a 1969 version that earned John Wayne an Academy Award. Bridges stars as lawman Rooster Cogburn, hired by a 14-year-old girl to track down her father’s killer.

While “True Grit” rides high, Hollywood’s overall revenues continued a slide that persisted through the fall and holiday season with a drop of 30% on takings from the same time last year.

Natalie Portman wows us in Red Swan!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Black Swan the psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue when a new rival joins the company (Mila Kunis).

The movie follows the story of Nina (Portman), a New York City ballerina whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance.  She lives with her mother Erica (Barbara Hershey), a retired ballerina who zealously supports her daughter.  When  the artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice.  However, Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well.  Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality.  Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan.

As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

It may well be a genre that is a little tired but all the same it is a movie that is well worth the trip to the cinema with excellent performances all round.

The Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER), takes a thrilling and sometimes terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.
