Gender bender causing a stir on the womenswear catwalk at London Fashion Week

    Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Meet Andrej Pejic who stunned the crowd at Couture Week in Paris last month.  It seems that the fickle fashion industry has become enamoured with a whole new catwalking trend – the male model. sporting a wedding dress for Jean Paul Gaultier and looking every inch the blushing bride – despite being all man.

After that Andrej has made his way across the Channel where Andrej’s delicate features was the envy of most women.

Andrej has also worked with Vivienne Westwood.

Born in Serbia and brought up in Australia, the 19 year old model is being hailed the next big thing among industry insiders.

Since being discovered whilst working at McDonalds when a booker came in to order a cheeseburger his career – modelling both men and womenswear – has gone from strength to strength and says that he is more suited to sporting a dress than a suit.

He also claims that he has always been comfortable playing both roles and even finds it sometimes difficult to get in touch with his masculine side.

He told the Telegraph: I’m comfortable doing both.

Although womenswear is more glamorous.  The clothes are more exciting. In menswear I have to work more at having a masculine presence’

Curvy Girls; Good news on the fashion front.

    Friday, November 19th, 2010

The plus-size market in women’s clothes is increasing and to prove the point a full-figure fashion show was held in New York.

The fashion show in New York last Wednesday was in part a ploy to entice retailers to carry plus sizes.

Those stores that don’t carry bigger sizes? “Shame on you, baby, shame on you,” former model Ms. DeVoe said. “Every curvy girl that has a dollar is willing to spend that dollar.”

At last retailers are beginning to wake up!

A division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 28 percent of the adult population was obese last year, the highest percentage yet. Almost two-thirds of American women are either overweight or obese, according to the most recent CDC figures and standard clothing that most stores have focused on in recent years fits fewer and fewer people.

The was an increase of 1.4 per cent in the plus-size market increased while overall women’s apparel declined 0.8 percent in the 12 months leading up to April 2010 versus the same period a year earlier according to NPD Group, a market research firm.  It is not difficult to see why the market is waking up to the fuller figure woman.

As Ms. DeVoe said “It just makes business sense.”   Ms DeVoe who founded “Full-Figured Fashion Week” last year to press mainstream retailers to embrace bigger sizes continued, “I’ve been told several times that no one fantasizes about being a plus-size woman, and that’s probably true, but the fact remains that you have to work with what you have.”

Some of the drawbacks as far as retailers are concerned are that plus-size stocks take up valuable storage space, and not everyone stores weight in the same place, meaning stores cannot count on, say, a size 16 dress fitting most 180-pound women — one might have a larger torso, another big thighs and another wider hips.

Cost is another issue. Plus-size clothes are more difficult, and expensive, to make than more traditional sizes. Material are normally the most expensive part of the cost of a garment and larger sizes require not only more fabric, but sometimes may require different production processes.

“Its not just about how much fabric is required,” said Deepa Neary, a retail consultant at A.T. Kearney, a consulting firm. “You’re actually using wider bolts of fabric, and that sometimes requires special machinery to produce the garments. You often don’t get to pass that on to the consumer, so your margins are not as high as the regular-size clothing.”

Liz Claiborne, which still sells some plus-size clothing, shut down its plus-size line Elisabeth, along with Sigrid Olsen, which carried larger sizes. It sold Ellen Tracy, which also had a plus-size offering. But given the strong sales in the sector more recently, and women becoming ever more overweight, some companies are giving the plus-size market a second look.

The chain Forever 21, which is based in California, introduced Faith 21, its larger-size line, last year. Though sales were much stronger than the company expected, that did not mean it had mastered the category. “We have been working through the kinks even now,” said Linda Chang, Forever 21’s director of marketing. “It doesn’t come as easily as maybe the smaller clothing would.”

Last summer, Target began carrying a line called Pure Energy that translated young, trendy clothes to larger sizes, adding to its more mature plus-size offerings.

Talbots issues downbeat outlook and Shares fall.

    Monday, July 5th, 2010

Shares of clothing maker The Talbots Inc. fell Tuesday after it reported that its first-quarter revenue was below analysts’ expectations and it offered a disappointing profit outlook.

Talbots said its revenue rose 4 percent to $320.7 million for the three months that ended May 1 compared with $306.2 million a year earlier.  Thomson Reuters analysts had expected $323 million.  Talbots reported a net loss of $4.4 million, or 8 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $23.6 million, or 44 cents per share, a year ago. Excluding one-time items, the company said it would have earned 38 cents per share.

For the current quarter, Talbots expects earnings in a range of break even to 5 cents per share, excluding one-time costs. But analysts expected a profit of 5 cents per share.

After weak sales during the recession, Talbots pulled off a complex deal earlier this year that let it reduce its debt and buy out its largest shareholder, Japanese retail company Aeon (U.S.A.) Inc., which held a 54 percent stake. The clothing company, which is in the early stages of a turnaround, also revamped its fashions for consumers in their 30s and 40s to make them more stylish.

Even with all this in place Talbot’s shares fell 82 cents, more than 6 percent, to $12.66 in afternoon trading. They have traded from $3.61 to $17.79 over the past year.

Columbian model Angie Sanclemente involved in a drug trafficking ring

        Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Columbian model Angie Sanclemente is believed to be involved in a drug trafficking ring and has been on the run for two weeks since an Interpol issued an arrest warrant for her. Sanclemente is now on the “most wanted” list.

A group of people close to Sanclemente have already been arrested; two women and four men. Sanclemente is thought to have organized a group of models to carry cocaine across borders. And some of the sources have told police that Sanclemente and her boyfriend were the ringleaders of the group.

Sanclemente, 30, is a former beauty queen. And she has been running from authorities for about two weeks, but has taken the time to keep her Facebook page updated since then.

Sanclemente posted a message to CNN this week which said: “I’m very sad and hurt by the bad information. I don’t know how the press can destroy an innocent person.”

Then: “I don’t want to go to jail I don’t deserve it. I am innocent.” She went on to explain that she had hired an attorney. The attorney had been hired by her mother, and he had not spoken with Sanclemente yet.

See the video below for more information. CNN will air a full story Friday night about Angie Sanclemente.
