The first “Survivor” winner Richard Hatch, could be going back to jail.  On Friday he was ordered back to prison to serve a nine-month sentence for failing to pay taxes on the $1 million he won on the CBS reality show.

Hatch, spent more than three years in prison for tax evasion.  He was released in 2009, but had a three-year term of supervised release during which he was supposed to refile his 2000 and 2001 taxes and pay what he owed.  However he never did.

U.S. District Court Judge William Smith said Hatch had exhibited no remorse and had made no effort to comply with an order to pay his taxes.  He imposed a 9 month sentence after prosecutors recommended: six months – the maximum in the federal sentencing guidelines.

He said the term of supervised release, did not appear to be doing any good in Hatch’s case. He said a substantial sentence was required to send a message to Hatch and others who flout the court’s orders.

“You can continue to proclaim your innocence,” Smith said. “You don’t have the option of engaging in this type of game or negotiation with the court. It needs to be a severe punishment. That’s the only thing that will deter you in the future.”

He also ordered Hatch serve 26 months supervised release, during which time 25 percent of Hatch’s gross income would be garnished and paid directly to the IRS.  According to the Prosecutor Andrew Reich Hatch owes an estimated $2 million to the IRS on the Survivor winnings and other income, including penalties.

Hatch, who has filed an appeal of the decision with the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, was ordered to report for his prison term on Monday.

Philidelphia Priests charged with raping young Boys, after Grand Jury Probe

    Friday, February 11th, 2011

After a two-year grand jury investigation into priest abuse in the archdiocese, two Roman Catholic priests, a former priest and a Catholic school teacher in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia were charged Thursday with raping young boys.  The current case, involves two victims one of them a boy who was allegedly abused by two priests and his sixth-grade teacher at St. Jerome Paris.  The offenses are alleged to have started when he was a 10-year-old altar boy in 1998.

The other victim was a 14-year-old boy abused by another priest who previously served in the same parish and had a prior history of impropriety with minors, the report said.

In relation to incidents like these and other similar incidents, a former high-ranking church official was accused of transferring problem priests to new parishes.  The church official also failed to warn anyone of prior sex-abuse complaints.

Monsignor William Lynn was charged by the grand jury with endangering children in his role as secretary for clergy under former Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua.

Lynn, 60, failed in his duty to protect children in the five-county archdiocese.  His duty was to refer priests with known sexual problems for rehabilitation or prosecution, District Attorney Seth Williams said in announcing the charges.

“He instead lied to parishioners and went out of his way to reassign priests without telling pastors or principals that they were pedophiles,” Williams said.

Lynn’s defense lawyer said the two endangerment counts should not apply because Lynn did not have any children under his care. He also questioned the merits of the charges, which carry a maximum 14-year prison term.

“We certainly don’t concede for a moment that he knew he was putting children at risk,” lawyer Tom Bergstrom told The Associated Press.

Lynn figured prominently in a scathing 2005 grand jury report that found 63 priests in the archdiocese had been credibly accused of child sexual assault over several decades while local church officials turned a blind eye.  Frustrated prosecutors then concluded, though, that they could not file any criminal charges because the statute of limitations on the crimes had expired.

Pennsylvania has since revised laws to give child sex-assault victims more time to report abuse, while the archdiocese under Cardinal Justin Rigali has pledged to refer credible complaints to law enforcement.
