Greg Giraldo’s death is another reminder about prescription abuse problem

Sadly comedian Greg Giraldo died on Wednesday from unspecified complications after  accidentally overdosing on prescription drugs.

Giraldo, 44 was known to have a record of drug abuse and it’s disturbing that abuse of prescription drugs has been on the rise for the past few years, particularly among teenagers and not enough is being done to highlight this problem in the US or in Europe.

It’s time as parents we had a look at what we are keeping in our own bathrooms and at times we are unwittingly making these often-addictive drugs available to our kids.

Last Saturday the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration sponsored a medicine-chest clean out urging people to clean out their medicine stock piles.  For those who didn’t take part, here are guidelines for disposing of prescription drugs.

It’s a problem that is not going to go away and this is not a solution but at the least it’s a start.

Our thoughts are with Greg’s family at this time.
