Glam Photographer Herb Ritts

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Celebrity photographer Herb Ritts made him something of a celebrity himself. Now, nine years after his death, the work of Ritts is getting its own CLOSE UP.

Ritts’ friend Churchward thought it was time for a book that celebrated the man as well as the work.

“I think people want to know more about who’s behind the camera and something about them,” Churchward said. “And I think that’s what makes them last. And that’s why I wrote the book.”

Herb Ritts had a way of getting to the ESSENCE of a person.

“I can have a given situation set up, but it’s catching that moment – allowing them to be themselves – and capturing something that’s special,” he said.

Cindy Crawford . . .

“What I always say is the way Herb photographed you is the way that you wished you looked when you got up in the morning.”

. . . or singer-songwriter k.d. lang . . .

“I think Herb had a way of understanding how to exude the beauty within,” lang said. “I really do. He knew the balance of the soul and the body, and where the beauty was.”

Churchward said that Ritts, who grew up in L.A., introduced a new kind of glamour photography.

“Herb had been raised with light, with the beaches, with the sun,” he said. “Everybody before that was in the studio shooting and controlling everything. Suddenly he was able to take the same things outside and make people more natural and yet still have that glamour.”

Ritts’ photo of his pal Richard Gere – snapped while the two of them were waiting for a tire to be changed – helped launch both their careers in 1978.

Ritts once told CBS News, “Three months later, Vogue, Esquire, Mademoiselle had run all the images from the gas station that I’d taken, which was kind of interesting. And I got paid for it.”

Soon, he was getting photographing everyone, from Tom Cruise to Julia Roberts . . . hanging out at Vanity Fair’s Oscar party . . . and hosting his own celebrity-studded birthday bashes.

Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere (who were married for 4 years) met at one of Herb’s parties.

She said Ritts was just fun to be around:

“I mean, he was a mensch,” Crawford said. “I don’t know if you know that word. But he’s just a good guy. He was a total sweetheart. He loved people.”

“His photographs are in a class of their own,” said lang. “You can just recognize a Herb Ritts photo from, you know, ten paces.”

Ritts learned in 1989 that he had AIDS, but he worked up until the very end and his last shoot was for Vanity Fair on Ben Affleck.

Jerry Seinfeld wins libel lawsuit

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has won a court ruling that stemmed from a legal battle by cookbook author Missy Chase Lapine.  Lapine accused Seinfeld’s wife, Jessica, of stealing her idea for a book on how to get children to eat healthy. Both women published their books in 2007.

Seinfeld told Letterman Lapine was accusing his wife of “vegetable plagiarism.”

“So there’s another woman who had another cookbook,” he continued. “My wife never saw the book, read the book, used the book … But the books came out at the same time. So this woman says, ‘I sense this could be my wacko moment.”‘

A New York judge on Friday tossed out a libel lawsuit by cookbook author Missy Chase Lapine, who accused Seinfeld of hurting her reputation by mocking her on national television.

Justice Marcy Friedman said it was clear the comedian was joking when he called Lapine a “wacko” and that Seinfeld has a constitutional right to express his opinion.

A federal court agreed with Seinfeld that the copyright suit was baseless and tossed that out last year.  Friedman’s ruling, signed Wednesday but filed Friday, noted that you can’t sue someone for libel in the U.S. merely for hurling an insult. You must show that a person lied about facts in order to damage a person’s reputation and did so in such a way that a reasonable person would have believed that those false statements were true.

Randy Quaid to stay in Canada

    Friday, February 25th, 2011

At a press conference Wednesday actor Randy Quaid said that he will be allowed to stay in Canada indefinitely.

“When Evi and I came to Canada last October we could never have envisioned how things would unfold and how our lives would change,” Randy said at the press conference, according to the CBC. “Today we’re here to say thank you Canada. Thank you for your warm welcome. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to live in peace.”

Quaid’s wife Evi was granted Canadian citizenship on Feb. 10.  Evi’s father was born in the country according to the CBC and The Hollywood Reporter reports that his wife Evi now has Canadian citizenship and she will sponsor the actor.

Quaid failed to appear at a hearing in Santa Barbara, Calif. on felony burglary and misdemeanor charges that he and his wife Evi allegedly squatted in the guest house of a home they used to own.

The Quaids claim they were seeking asylum in Canada to escape from people they described as “Hollywood star whackers” who allegedly killed Heath Ledger, David Carradine and Chris Penn in the United States.

Buju Banton found guilty of cocaine and gun charges

    Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

After 11 hours deliberation a federal jury returned their verdict on the fate of Grammy winner reggae singer Banton.  He was found guilty of three of the four charges he faced.

The Jamaican reggae singer, won his Grammy just last week for best reggae album for “Before the Dawn.”

He was found guilty on Tuesday of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense and using the wires to facilitate a drug trafficking offense. He was acquitted of attempted possession with the intent to distribute cocaine.

Wildly popular in his native Jamaica, his trial was based on accusations that he conspired with two other men in setting up a drug deal in December of 2009.  The courtroom was packed with supporters that included other well known reggae artists.

Prosecutors argued that Banton portrayed himself as a broker of drug deals in several conversations with a confidential informant.  Defense attorneys countered that he was simply a “big talker” trying to impress.

This was Banton’s second trial. A jury deadlocked in his first trial last year.
