Few Surprises Appear As ‘The King’s Speech’ Leads With 12 Oscar Nominations

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
The Weinstein Co.

Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter were all nominated for their work in The King’s Speech, which led this morning’s Oscar nominations with 12.

There were no surprises at the Academy Award nominations this morning.  As expected the ten Best Picture nominations went to 127 Hours, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, Black Swan, The Social Network, Inception, The Fighter, Winter’s Bone, Toy Story 3, and True Grit.

(Here’s a list of the major nominees.)

The King’s Speech led with 12 nominations, including major-category nods for its screenplay; actors Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush; and its director, Tom Hooper.

Behind it were True Grit the most successful cowboy movie for some time with 10 nominations.

Inception and The Social Network, both had eight.

The Fighter, had seven nominations, all in prominent categories: three for actors, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, and Amy Adams, all in supporting categories.  Perhaps one surprise was that there was no nomination for lead Mark Wahlberg, one for its screenplay, one for its director, and one for its editing, in addition to Best Picture.

Ozarks-based drama Winter’s Bone, a film that seemed at risk of being nudged out of a bunch of different categories and forgotten, wound up earning four nominations: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress (newcomer Jennifer Lawrence), and Best Supporting Actor candidate , John Hawkes, well know from a large backlog of character work on television (including a late run on Lost), whether you recognize his name or not.

Joel and Ethan Coen were nominated for Best Director for True Grit, along with David O. Russell (The Fighter), Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), David Fincher (The Social Network), and Hooper. That nudged out expected nominee Christopher Nolan, who directed the infernally complex Inception. Also showing up a little less than some expected was Ben Affleck’s film The Town, which pulled in only a Supporting Actor nomination for Jeremy Renner after being talked up for a possible Best Picture spot.

The much-discussed “fifth spot” for Best Actor — after Firth, James Franco (127 Hours), Jeff Bridges (True Grit) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) — went to Javier Bardem for Biutiful, which was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. That left out possible contenders like Robert Duvall (Get Low) and Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine).

Nominees for Best Actress, meanwhile, are Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone).

One thing is for sure, these nominations will be seen as significantly less controversial than those from the prior year.

R. Sargent Shriver remembered by grandchildren for helping others, hugs and baseball passion

Maria Shriver (3L), Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) and other loved ones carry the casket of Sargent Shriver into at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on January 22, 2011 in Potomac, Maryland. Robert Sargent Shriver Jr., a politician and activist who was the first leader of the Peace Corps and was involved in other social programs, died at the age of 95.

R. Sargent Shriver was honored today for his passion for helping others, his loving hugs and enjoyment of baseball.  His wife Eunice Shriver, the sister of the late John F. Kennedy, died in 2009 at age 88.

Sargent Shriver was a businessman and lawyer descended from a prominent Maryland family.  Shriver will be buried later Saturday in the same cemetery as his wife in Hyannis, Mass.

Shriver fulfilled his brother-in-law John F. Kennedy’s campaign promise by starting the Peace Corps.  The aid organization developed into an international force. Philanthropists and politicians were among hundreds honoring Shriver at a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Parish.

Some of Shriver’s 19 grandchildren read short remembrances about their grandfather.  They recalled his passion for helping people, his hugs and his love of baseball.

Anthony Shriver, welcomed the guests at his father’s funeral service before the Mass began.  He cracked a few jokes in honor of his father.

“He loved all people, all different types of people from all different backgrounds,” Anthony Shriver said.

He said his father had instructed him: “You tell Cardinal Wuerl to make Eunice a saint!” The crowd erupted in laughter.

Now chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics, Tim Shriver said his father never coddled the children but “coached us to pursue those big, big ideas.”

“Sarge” Shriver never chose to see the world as jaded and broken, Tim Shriver said. Instead, he saw it as “infused with God’s spirit. Awe breaking through at each moment.
I hope you, too, will carry a little ‘Sarge’ in you.”

Former NBC reporter and wife of former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger, Maria Shriver, said her family took comfort in “knowing that Daddy is in heaven with God and with Mummy.”

Elaine Irwin to Weather Divorce from John Mellancamp ‘Just Fine,’ Says Pal

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

Elaine Irwin and John Mellencamp will remain friends as they end their 19-year marriage, a longtime pal told PEOPLE.

“There will be no war between Elaine and John Mellencamp,” Kris Gebhardt, John’s former trainer and 11-year friend of the exes, tells PEOPLE. “They are both levelheaded people who are great parents. They have a lot of respect for each other.”

According to Gebhardt Irwin, 41, will get through her breakup from John, 59, without a problem.

“No one is happy with a split, but Elaine is a trouper, a doer and a woman who can exist on her own just fine,” Gebhardt says. “She’s a gem and so is John.”

He also stated that the couple’s split had nothing to do with Meg Ryan.

“Divorce doesn’t happen over one thing,” Gebhardt says. “Things changed, directions differed and ambitions have taken their own course. It took awhile to get to this stage. It was not a sudden decision and not about another person.”

Irwin, was engaged to John after only ten weeks of dating. She was only 23 at the time.

The x-couple have two sons, Hud and Speck.

Beyonce Virgin until she met Jay-Z

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

Singer Beyonce, 29, has claimed that she was a virgin until meeting now husband Jay-Z.

According to the superstar she only had one other boyfriend besides her husband, whom she met in 2002 and had never dated anyone other than her first boyfriend and Jay-Z.

“People would be surprised as to the lack of experiences I’ve had,” said Beyonce. “When I was 12 or 13 I had my first boyfriend, and he was my boyfriend until I was 17.”

Beyonce claims her maturity, loyalty, and friendships with other women stopped her from being in unhealthy relationships with men.

She did not directly say she that she was still a virgin until her twenties, rather she hinted when she was discussing her first relationship.

“Though I was too young for it to really be a boyfriend — we didn’t live together, we didn’t, you know . . . That was my only experience with a guy, and since then I’ve only had one other boyfriend in my life — Jay,” she said.

It’s good to be in control of your own life.

You don’t get to be a Superstar without drive and dedication and a lot of it means putting your personal life on the back burner or making a lot of mistakes along the way.

Seems like the singer chose the former!

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are still in Brazil filming scenes for Breaking Dawn.

They were wandering around Rio yesterday, filming scenes, and paparazzi “caught” them kissing – for the film.

Given that these two are supposedly a real life couple the chemistry between them seems non-existent and their “romantic” scenes unbelievable and awkward.

Is Todd Palin Having an Affair With Shailey Tripp?

    Friday, January 21st, 2011
Is the Todd Palin /Shailey Tripp affair really true?

Did Todd Palin really have an affair with the massage therapist as The National Enquirer is reporting?

According to the paper the Pailin and Tripp, a female massage therapist who was arrested for prostitution earlier this year had an affair and hinted that the police have some sort of physical evidence against Todd Palin.

If there is any credence to the rumors it could be the first time that a potential Presidential candidate was involved in an adultery scandal.

The current President’s approval rating is the lowest it’s ever been, and it seems rather coincidental that this story has emerged just as Sarah Palin may run for the Presidency?

So is this just another attempted smear campaign against Sarah Palin?

    What do you think?

Hollywood Rises to defend Ricky Gervais!

    Friday, January 21st, 2011

It would appear at least some people got Ricky Gervais‘ sense of humor!  Which is hardly a surprise given his success in the US.

There may have been a lot of controversy surrounding his performance as host at last Sunday’s Golden Globes some of the actors who attended and others who watched the show have taken to Twitter and other outlets to defend him.

Here are just some of the comments:

    Christian Bale:

“Thank God for comedians. I’m hoping he’s going to keep going further.”

    Larry King:

“The folks who put him on the Globes have no right to complain about Ricky Gervais. He does what he does. Why should it surprise them? You agree?”

    Andrew Garfield:

“He’s been terribly nasty and horribly rude and I think he’s genius.”

    Elizabeth Banks:

“I thought RG was hilarious. Actors can take it. We have thick skins.”

    Jon Stewart:

“[I’m] offended that a comedian could be that funny at an awards show.”

    Lost writer Damon Lindelof:

“In case you forgot what made David Brent so brilliant, it’s that he made us feel unsafe, uncomfortable and unable to look away. BRAVORICKY.”

    Jim Parsons:

“He started with a bang and went right for the jugular. It was great! I thought he was really funny. It’s like he walked up to the edge, and then he jumped right on over and didn’t look back. I was scandalized, I tell you. I think he’s hilarious and funny and whenever you’re funny, you’re gonna push some people’s buttons. I thought he was hilarious, but I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end, I can tell you that. I was laughing while thinking, ‘Oh, God. Not me, never me.'”

    Al Pacino:

“He’s a comic, so he’s going to go for it. He’s letting it go. You don’t know what [he’s] going to say!”

    Heather Morris:

“I thought he was hysterical. He was so dry. He’s funny as hell.”

    Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh:

“He was hilarious. I thought he was just perfect. If he knocked me, it’s all in good fun. If we take ourselves too seriously, then what are we doing here? He makes us realize that we are all here for reasons that go between skill and luck. Let’s enjoy it.”

I think you get the drift.

Don’t you think they should apologize?
