As Tampa Police officer escorted Julie Powers Schenecker to Orient Road Jail on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 in Tampa, we are all left wondering what could possess someone who outwardly seemed so normal to shoot and kill her two teenage children.

The family appeared to be happy, at least according to friends — and they appeared to glow in photos posted online. The two teens were described as well-mannered by family friends. In several family portraits on Parker Schenecker’s Facebook page, the four posed, smiling and relaxed.

Police say she admitted the slayings giving her reasons that they “talked back” and were “mouthy.”   The officers found her covered in blood on the back porch of her home Friday morning.

Schenecker’s mother had apparently called police from Texas because she was unable to reach her daughter.  She described her as  depressed and said she had been complaining about her children.

Schenecker  failed to appear in court Saturday because she was hospitalized and reportedly in intensive care with an unspecified condition.

Authorities say she also planned to commit suicide after the murder of her 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son with a .38-caliber pistol. Calyx, the girl, was 16 and a cross country running star at her high school.  The 13-year-old son, Beau, was in eighth grade.

Schenecker is married to Army Col. Parker Schenecker.  He was in the Middle East when the tragic event took place at their home on Thursday.

A second court date has been set for Sunday. It is yet unclear whether Schenecker will appear at the hearing.

She has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
